Rules for authors
General rules
1) Texts in Spanish and English are accepted.
2) Texts must be coherent with the focus, scope, contents, and preferred areas of knowledge that are presented in the "About the journal" section.
3) All submitted papers must be original, unpublished, and not have been submitted to another journal for the selection process. If this is not the case, authors must expressly state so on the first page, explaining the reason for submitting it to Studia Humanitatis Journal.
4) The texts must conform to the editorial standards.
5) The same manuscript may be signed by up to four authors, as long as it is justifiable and all of them have contributed to the final result. Among the authors, one will be the contact author and will be the one with whom communications and dialogues will be established. It is understood that the other authors give their consent.
6) The same author may not publish in consecutive issues.
7) External evaluators may not publish in the issues in which they have served as evaluators.
8) Authors, by submitting their texts, acknowledge that they are aware of and accept the rules and commitments established in the code of ethics and the good practices guide.
9) If accepted for publication, authors must sign a declaration of authorship, authenticity, originality, responsibility, and conflict of interest.
10) By submitting their texts, the authors agree to participate in the peer-review process, attending to the suggestions and observations of the editorial team and reviewers and offering the necessary corrections, unless they prefer to withdraw their text. Likewise, the authors whose originals have been accepted for publication must be available to collaborate in the correct edition of their text, to correct errors, resolve doubts or provide additional materials if required.
11) The journal commits itself to give a response on the publication or not of the texts received within less than 4 months, counting from the time the text has been accepted for evaluation by anonymous peers. It also commits to report on the key milestones of the status of the evaluation through its website. In addition, both the status of an article in the review process and the decisions taken can be consulted by the author by logging into the website with his/her user name and password.
Text writing standards
Texts
- The extension will be between 8000 and 12000 words for scientific articles. Bibliographic reviews will be between 2000 and 4000 words. Other contributions, between 4000 and 5000 words, except for reviews and bibliographical news, which may be between 500 and 1000 words.
- Texts should preferably be submitted in Word format (.doc, .docx), font "Times New Roman", size 12, line spacing 1.5. Use the standard Microsoft Word margins and do not justify.
- They should include (in Spanish and English): title, abstract of 200 to 250 words, and a maximum of 7 keywords.
- The abstract should indicate, in an extremely summarized manner, what the article is about, the approach taken to develop it, and any relevant conclusions.
- Articles should begin with an introduction that succinctly expresses the interest or justification of the work, the objectives and hypotheses, the methodological approach and the structure followed. Contextualizing introductions, which serve to delimit and justify the topic, are also admitted. In this case, the introduction should be followed by an epigraph in which the objectives, hypotheses, and methodological strategy are explicitly referred to.
- The texts should include at the end, before the bibliographical or documentary references, a brief section with the conclusions that have been obtained, indicating, if possible, what it contributes to the state of knowledge and suggesting ways of study for further work.
- Authors should submit their text through the studiahumanitatisjournal.com website, following the detailed procedure indicated in the "rules for authors" section.
- The text will be structured in headings that will express the main parts of the article. They will be in bold and without numbering. It is recommended not to use subheadings. In case it is done, only one subheading of level 1 is allowed, in italics without bold, without numbering.
- The text should not include space between paragraphs. The new paragraphs will begin indented at 1.25 centimeters. On the other hand, the titles of headings and sub-headings should be separated by a blank space, both before and after them.
Citations
- All sources used in the writing of the paper should be identified.
- Any prior clarification that the authors consider should be included (linking the article to a research group or project, thanks to persons and institutions, ...) will appear in an unnumbered initial note at the foot of the first page, whose call will be a superscript asterisk at the end of the title.
- Footnotes will be inserted automatically. Footnotes should be in Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced.
- Bibliographic references: the APA reference system will be used (version 7, see manual).
Tables, graphs, maps or images
- Formats: Word/jpeg or tiff image. Each table, graph, map, or image must be in a separate file. Each file should be titled "table 1", "graph 1", ... etc.
- They should only be included when they are essential to support the argumentation, limiting the number of these to a maximum of five. In any case, tables and other images should be as self-explanatory as possible (order number and title with the variables it relates, in the header; source or authorship, below, without a previous blank line; date, in the header or below, where in each case it could be more appropriate). All of them should be numbered in Arabic numerals and followed by the source. The location of the table or image ("[TABLE 1]", "[TABLE 2]", ...) will be included in the text in parentheses.
- Authors are responsible for the rights of reproduction of these materials and must sign a statement to that effect.
- The resolution of the images to be sent should be 300 dpi and with a minimum size of 13 x 18 cm.
Table model
The tables shall be prepared according to the following model, which may be adapted according to the needs of the work.
Table 1. Model SHJ table. In this line the title is indicated, which should make clear what variables or contents the table presents or relates.

Text submission guidelines
- The journal is entirely digital, in Open Journal System and Open Access. Consequently, the processes of submission, evaluation, and publication will be done through the web www.studiahumanitatisjournal.com and all movements and decisions will be registered in it.
- Before sending the files with the text and other complementary information indicated below, the system requires that certain information fields with metadata about the text and its authors be filled in. The metadata should include the ORCID identification number of the authors. The metadata must include a statement from the contact author agreeing to participate in the peer-review process, taking into account the suggestions and notes of the editorial team and reviewers, and offering any corrections that may be necessary, unless they prefer to withdraw their text. They must also accept another statement indicating that the work submitted is of their authorship, that it is original and unpublished, and that it is not being evaluated for publication in another context. If, after the review process, the text is accepted for publication, all authors must sign the various declarations of conformity on a specific form that will be provided by Studia Humanitatis Journal.
- All authors of a text must be registered on the web (they can be registered as readers, authors, and reviewers simultaneously), although only one will be listed as the contact author of the corresponding text.
- Sending a text opens a conversation, as well as a series of webmail options, which will serve to establish a dialogue between the contact author and the editors during the entire editorial process, including the acceptance or rejection of the texts received.
- Authors may receive e-mail messages from the @studiahumanitatis.com domain addresses. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you periodically check your spam folder, and have it configured in such a way that messages coming from that domain can reach your main inbox.
- The evaluation process by external reviewers is completely anonymous. To facilitate this process, the originals should be submitted in two different files, in Word (.doc or .docx) format for MS Windows (in no case: PDF or Word for Mac). They should be sent indicating in the subject line: "Text SHJ":
- FILE 1: full text without anonymization, as the authors would like it to be published. It should include, in this order:
- Title of the paper (Spanish and English), if possible no longer than 100 characters, spaces included.
- Name of the authors and the institutions they represent (these, in their original language plus Spanish or English). If they are not affiliated with any institution, they should indicate "Independent".
- Abstract of the paper (in Spanish and English), between 200 and 250 words.
- Keywords (no more than 7, in English and Spanish).
- Summary or Table of Contents of the article (in Spanish and English). Authors should take care in the selection of keywords avoiding, as far as possible, that they coincide with those appearing in the title.
- Text and bibliography.
- Annexes should be avoided, but if they are included, they should be included in separate files, called Annex 1, Annex 2, etc., sequentially.
- At the end of the document, after the bibliography or annexes, the complete identifying data of the authors will be included: name, institution to which they belong, postal address, e-mail, ORCID, and contact telephone numbers, as well as a brief curriculum vitae (150 words per author, maximum). The name, institution, city, country, contact e-mail, and ORCID of up to 4 authors will be published. This file should be named with the word "principal" followed by two words representative of its title, as in this example: "principal_xenophobic-populism". In case there were later versions, the version number and the date it was saved (year/month/day) would be included. Thus: "principal_v2_xenophobic-populism 20210331").
- FILE 2: Anonymized full text in which the names of the authors and all references that serve to identify them, whether in the body of the text, in the citations, in the footnotes, or the bibliographical references, have been eliminated. The name of the authors and the title of their work should be replaced by the generic word "Author" and year. In addition, the author's identification should be removed from the Word file properties (Microsoft Word: File > Save As > Tools > Security Options > When saving, remove personal information from the file properties > Save). You will include, in this order:
- a) Title of the paper (Spanish and English), if possible no longer than 100 characters, spaces included.
- Abstract of the paper (in Spanish and English), between 200 and 250 words.
- Keywords (no more than 7, in English and Spanish).
- A summary or table of contents of the article (in English and Spanish). Authors should take care in the selection of the keywords avoiding, as far as possible, that they coincide with what appears in the title.
- Text and bibliography.
- Annexes should be avoided, but if they are included, they should be included in separate files, called Annex 1, Annex 2, etc., sequentially.
This file should be named with the word "anonymized" followed by two words representative of its title, as in this example: "anonymized_xenophobic-populism". In the case of subsequent versions, the version number and the date it was saved (year/month/day) would be included. Thus: "anonymized_v1_xenophobic-populism 20210331").
In the case tables, graphs, maps, or any other image are included, they shall be included in separate files (one for each table, graph, map, or any other image), whether they are to be included within the text or as annexes. They should also be in editable format, preferably in Word (.doc, .docx) for MS Windows. If they are included in the text, they will be called "table", "graph", "map", "image" followed by a correlative number. This same expression and number will appear (in capital letters) within the text, in the place where the corresponding table, graph, etc, should appear. In the case of annexes, they should be called "annex", if there is one, or "annex-1" and successively, if there are several (a different file for each annex).
- The editorial team of the journal will communicate the receipt of originals immediately. The author must be attentive to any communication from the journal, and frequently check his/her spam folder, or have it properly configured to prevent messages sent by the journal from ending up there.
Review process
The works received will go through the following process:
- Receipt of the manuscript. A confirmation e-mail is sent to the contact author.
- Reading of the text by the management team to confirm that the files and text comply with the editorial and submission standards. If they do not comply, a request for correction of deficiencies will be sent to the contact author within a period not exceeding one month from the receipt of the submission. If they are not corrected or the modified files are not returned within the established deadline, the submission will be discarded and the review process will end here (desk rejection).
- If the formal deficiencies have been corrected, members of the management team and/or editorial board will meet to determine whether or not the text corresponds to the focus, scope, content, and other editorial policies of the journal, and whether or not it is of interest to the journal.
- If this initial selection considers the work to be unpublishable, the author will be informed within one month of receipt of the text in accordance with the rules of writing and submission.
- If the text is accepted for anonymous peer review, a request for evaluation will be sent to peer reviewers, along with the anonymized files and evaluation form, and a deadline will be given for the reviewer to respond to the request. If the reviewer does not respond within this period, a reminder will be sent. If he/she does not respond either, or if he/she refuses to do the evaluation, the text will be reassigned to another reviewer, following the same process until a suitable reviewer accepts the evaluation. Once the evaluation task is accepted, the reviewer will have one month to execute it.
If the text is assessed as publishable without modifications, the management team, with the support of the editorial board, will decide whether to publish it and in what issue. This decision will be made within no more than one month from receipt of the reviewer's evaluation.
- If the evaluator suggests improvements, these will be forwarded to the contact author, who will proceed to correct the suggestions within a reasonable minimum period (around 15 days). In case of no response, after a warning, the text will be rejected, and this will be publicly reported.
- If the author makes the requested improvements within the established deadline, the publication of the text (yes/no, in what number) will be decided by the management team, which may request the support of the editorial board for this purpose. Decisions will be communicated to the contact author within a maximum period of one month after receiving the files with the modified text and verifying that everything requested has been modified, or that a convincing argument has been made for not doing so. If the improvements suggested by the reviewer were very profound, a second review could be requested from the same reviewer before the decision, for which he/she would have two weeks. In this case, the deadline for communicating the decision to the author would also be extended by two weeks.
- If the reviewer rejects the text, but the editorial team considers it appropriate, it may request a second evaluation from another reviewer, extending the deadlines as necessary, and reporting the author accordingly.
- In any case, if the management team and/or the editorial board make suggestions for improvement, these may be included at the end of the evaluation process, together with those that may have been made by anonymous peers. The final word on the publication of a text rests with the editorial team.
- Once a text has been accepted for publication, Studia Humanitatis Journal begins the editing process. Authors may be asked to collaborate in the revision of style and during the layout process of their text.
